Critical incident support

Trauma can strike organisations in many different ways. From natural disasters to workplace fatalities, traffic accidents and personal bereavement, critical incidents can have a devastating impact both on individuals, their teams and their families.

CiC has developed long-standing expertise in supporting those who work in some of the world's most challenging environments. Our global service currently covers clients including humanitarian agencies, police forces, war reporters, the construction industry and others. But we also know that tragedy can strike close to home in the most apparently stable environments.

CiC's critical incident support staff are selected from our most experienced and highly qualified clinicians, many of whom have completed a year-long intensive training at the Tavistock Trauma Unit in London, a leading school of excellence in trauma training.

We believe strongly that sensitive social support is the priority after a traumatic event. Once people have stabilised and the shock has subsided, it can then be time to think about the possibility of longer-term counselling or psychotherapy.

For this reason, CiC offers a combination of rapid response, on-site intervention and longer-term clinical support. Our extensive experience of critical incidents includes both group interventions and one-to-one support in a range of scenarios including:

  • Terrorist attacks
  • Rail crashes/aviation incidents
  • Armed robbery
  • Road accidents
  • Bomb threats/evacuations
  • Sudden deaths in the workplace.

Where on-site support is impossible (such as conflict zones) every attempt will be made to facilitate telephone or on-line support as appropriate. Cultural needs will always be taken very seriously, and language and regional diversity respected at all times.

Longer-term psychological care
While many people are naturally resilient and will recover from crisis under their own steam, research shows that between eight and ten percent of those exposed to traumatic events will experience longer term symptoms that may interfere with their capacity to lead happy and fulfilled productive lives.

CiC counsellors can help individual clients decide if they feel they would like longer term support. In Britain, CiC can make referrals to qualified counsellors living near a client's home or place of work. Overseas, CiC will locate and assess clinicians locally, ensuring the very best care available.
